TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
It has been an extremely snowy winter in Toledo. This winter ranks number 3 in Toledo history when it comes to snowfall total. All the snow and ice has made it extremely difficult to pick up trash along Toledo streets and alleyways.
Trash pickup days have been delayed several times, and pickup was even canceled for some Toledo residents for one week.
Republic crews were working to pick up trash along Delence Street in east Toledo on Monday. Residents there normally have their garbage collected on Wednesdays, but say it's better late than never.
"The bottom line is our service was finally taken care of, be it a few days late, I can understand with the weather that it had to be," said Michael Murphy.
Snow and cars parked along the street made it impossible for Republic's large trucks to collect trash. The company put a dumpster in the back of a pickup truck and sent crews to dump cans by hand.
Republic says the city has been working with them to ensure trash can be collected.
"It's not just about them sending a plow they will send bucket loaders if necessary to make a street passable for us," said Paul Rasmusson with Republic Services.
Rasmusson says residents can help by moving their cars off of streets if possible, or at least parking on just one side of the street.
