FirstEnergy working to replace generators at Davis-Besse plant

(Toledo News Now) -

It's a $600 million project underway for FirstEnergy to replace the two original steam generators at the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant.

With each generator weighing in at 470 tons, it's a long-term maintenance project that's been in the planning stages over the past several years.

The company says the outage began February 1 for refueling and replacing the generators, but won't comment on how long the outage will last. While it's the most expensive type of maintenance for nuclear plants using pressurized water reactors, the project is expected to generate $108 million for the local economy, as 2,300 additional workers will be on site for the project along with 700 Davis-Besse employees.

"Some of these are local, there's about a thousand contractors, pipefitters, insulators, iron workers, those folks from northwest Ohio area, then another 1,300 or so that are brought in, specialty vendors brought in from other parts of the country," said FirstEnergy Spokesperson Jennifer Young. T

he company's current operating license expires in April of 2017, and the company is seeking a 20-year extension of that license.
