Authorities are investigating a five-vehicle accident that shut down the Beechmont Levee for several hours Wednesday morning in Anderson Township.

Officers said Isaias Santiago was driving a 1994 Honda Civic eastbound on Beechmont Avenue just after 7 a.m. when he lost control in the 4000 block of Beechmont Avenue. Santiago's car went left of center and sideswiped a 2011 GMC Acadia driven by 68-year-old Robert McElroy who was headed westbound.

The Cincinnati Police Department Traffic Unit reports that Santiago's Honda Civic then hit the back of a 2009 Honda Ridgeline, driving by Dennis Setters. Setters' vehicle was subsequently hit by a 2004 Infiniti driven by 16-year-old Erica Behrens.

Santiago's car continued in the westbound lane and eventually hit a Ford Taurus head-on, driven by Heather Kirn, 44.

Emergency crews extricated Santiago from his car. He was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC) and listed in serious condition. Kirn, who collided with Santiago head-on, was also taken to UCMC with minor injuries.

Officers said neither Setters nor Behrens were injured. All drivers, with the exception of Santiago, were wearing a seatbelt.

The crash investigation is ongoing and any witnesses are asked to call the Cincinnati Police Department Traffic Unit at (513) 352-2514.

Beechmont Levee was closed in both directions between Columbia Parkway and State Route 32 but reopened shortly after 11 a.m.

A second accident was reported in Hyde Park involving a fire truck that was responding to the Beechmont Levee crash. Officers said the truck hit a car in the 2900 block of Linwood Avenue. The driver of the car was also taken to the hospital.
