SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield police raided a Lamount Street home at about noontime Tuesday and recovered a gun and nine pounds of pure cocaine valued at $100,000, according to Springfield Police Department Sgt. John Delaney.

The Postal Authority contacted Springfield police and state police after they discovered a shipment of four kilograms of cocaine inside a USPS express mail parcel sent from Puerto Rico, Delaney said.

The package was addressed to 31-year-old Angel Candelaria of 46 Lamont St. in Springfield. Detectives applied for a search warrant for his first-floor residence, and eventually delivered the package to Candelaria. Immediately after the package was delivered the officers conducted a raid and arrested Candelaria, Delaney said.

Police seized a Smith and Wesson .40-caliber handgun and the opened package of cocaine, Delaney said. The handgun was reportedly stolen from a house break in West Springfield.

"Great teamwork by all agencies involved," Delaney said. "Trooper Daniel Soto and Springfield Police Officer Pablo Diaz along with Postal Inspector Richard Tracy did an outstanding job coordinating this raid and seizure."

Police charged Candelaria with trafficking more than 200 grams of cocaine, which carries a mandatory 12-year jail sentence. He was also charged with possession of a firearm, receiving a stolen firearm, and possession of ammunition.

Candelaria was scheduled to be arraigned in Springfield District Court on Wednesday. The investigation is ongoing.
