Most Americans will save their tax refunds

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - Most Americans plan to save the tax refunds they're expecting this year and not spend the extra cash.

That's from a new TD Ameritrade survey.

According to the poll, 61 percent of Americans say they'll save or invest their refunds, 21 percent plan to pay off debt and 18 percent will spend the money on necessities.

But only 19 percent of those surveyed say they expect to make non-essential purchases with their refunds.

The IRS says the average tax refund was $2,744 last year.
