WOOD COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Clean-up is underway after a train derailment in downtown Tontogany Monday night.
Of the train's 60 cars, 18 were derailed. Seventeen of those cars were empty, but one contained scrap metal.
Although no injuries have been reported, two buildings were damaged: the fire department and township maintenance. A portion of the fire hall will need to be torn down, as a result.
One or two trains pass by on the tracks each hour, but neighbors say nothing like this has ever happened.
"All of a sudden it just kept getting louder and louder. And all of a sudden, it sounded like a tornado was coming through. [I] popped open the window and I saw the carnage out here and just dialed 911 real quick, 'cause I didn't know if there was any tankers or anything in there. It was pretty bad," said neighbor Kevin Wichman.
CSX is looking into the cause of the derailment, which could take weeks. There is no word yet on how long it will take to clean up the scene, but officials say getting the cars back on track is their number one priority.
CSX would like to commend the quick work of emergency responders and also apologize to neighbors for any inconvenience.
