The Ohio Department of Transportation has announced the Anthony Wayne Bridge is scheduled to close on March 17 at 7 a.m. to vehicle and pedestrian traffic through September 2015. ODOT expects the project to be complete in December 2015, weather permitting.
ODOT awarded the $28.7 million improvement project to the E.S. Wagner Company of Oregon. Work includes redecking the bridge, replacing the existing truss end spans, rehabilitation of the existing substructures, new street lighting, as well as rebuilding the sidewalks, railings and fence.
Following the closure, lane restrictions will be put in place for an additional construction season for painting.
ODOT plans to hold an informational meeting regarding the project and closure soon, but drivers already know how this is going to affect their daily commute.
"It's a major connection to the east side. It pretty much splits the city. I can't imagine it being shut down," said Joshua Cooper.
"I think it's going to bottle us up quite a bit. The bridge is used a lot. I see people go across it all the time, and it's going to tie up a lot of the traffic," said Daniel Bartolet.
The closure will force drivers to find a new way around the city. Drivers who use the bridge to drive to work are worried travel will become even more difficult.
"I don't even know what to think right now. I'm going to be mad because it's going to be more gas and times are rough," said Nomey Townes.
Suggested detour: Oak Street, Fassett Street, Miami Street, I-75, Anthony Wayne Trail (Exit 201B), Monroe Street, Summit Street.
Drivers say they will use the detour and GPS to get around during construction.
