TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A major expansion project is on the horizon at the Westgate Village Shopping Center in West Toledo.

Phase one was years in the making. It became a reality in 2007 when the former shopping complex on the south side of Central Avenue was torn down and a new facility was built, anchored by a Costco store with other retail and restaurant operations.

Now the focus is shifting to the north side of Central Avenue next to the Sears and Elder-Beerman stores. The two department stores will remain untouched, but the Nuevo Vallarta restaurant and Arnie's Saloon will be torn down to make room for new development.

"When we first started we started a slow business and started to gain customers," said Nuevo Vallarta owner Jose Meda.

After 5 years at Westgate, Meda says he's moving to a location he bought on Douglas Road.

"Across the street they talked about it for 13 years and it finally happened 6 years ago, but yeah we knew it was coming we weren't sure when," said Meda.

The plan for the Westgate Village Shopping Center expansion calls for 3 new buildings to be built for additional retail, restaurant and office space.
