Students fight against UT smoking ban legislation

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Smoking on campus has been a hot topic for people at the University of Toledo. There is currently legislation in the works to ban smoking on campus, but not all students are on board.

On Monday, students in the group The Young Americans for Liberty handed out cigarette-shaped messages encouraging people to join their fight. They are petitioning to repeal the campus smoking ban legislation.

Last fall, the student government conducted a survey, asking students if they wanted a smoking ban. Sixty percent of students were for the ban.

The facility senate and university council have already voted in favor of the ban. The final step is for university trustees to vote on the ban. The Young Americans for Liberty hope to gain enough support to stop any type of ban from happening.

"We believe people should have their own personal liberty and they should be able to make their own decisions," said Ron Johns, president of The Young Americans for Liberty. "With most people here at the University of Toledo being over the age of 18, they should be able to make their own decisions if they smoke on campus."

Johns says his organization collected around 150 signatures.
