Perrysburg senior overcame tragedy to succeed on the court

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

In a lot of ways, Perrysburg senior Sarah Baer appears to be the girl who has it all.

"Every day on the court, I'm always having a blast," said Baer

She's the captain of the varsity basketball team and is on her way to playing at BGSU next year, but behind her success is a tragedy that shaped who she is today.

"When I was little, I had a brother who passed away," she said. "It changed my view on everything."

Baer was only 11 when her brother Colin died in a car accident. Today, the 17-year-old honors his memory with a tattoo of his name located on her left shoulder

"I would say it opened up my eyes a lot. It makes me think about what's important in life."

And it's that attitude that's pushed her to succeed in life and athletics.

"I'm just trying to do the best in every game," she said. "And just feel accomplished."

"Girls want to follow her and I know some of the Junior Jacket girls really like her and want to be like her," said head coach Todd Sims.

She knows how to hit a 15-foot jumper, but more important, she knows how to deal with it when she misses.

"I only have basketball for so long in my life, so I might as well treasure it," she said.
