A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
A man is in jail after police say he tried to rob a woman outside a Toledo bar late Thursday night, resulting in a police chase and a pedestrian being struck.
Kristine Hennessey told police she was parking her SUV in the rear parking lot of J&D's Side Trip Bar when a man wearing a skeleton mask, brandishing a large hunting knife walked up to her, demanding money.
Hennessey says it all happened so fast.
"You hear it all day, everywhere else, but, you know, you never think it's going to happen to you," she said.
Hennessey said she was aware of two other robberies at the bar and thought he was playing a joke on her. When she realized he was serious, she told the man she had no cash, so he told her to move over, as he climbed into the car.
"I told him I didn't have cash. So he told me to get over. So as I'm going over to the passenger side, I went to open my passenger door and just dove out," Hennessey said.
At this time, police say a witness came up to the car to try and stop them, but when the man showed the knife, the witness backed away. During this, Hennessey jumped out of the car. The suspect then stole the vehicle and fled the scene. Hennessey escaped and those at the bar called 911.
A description of the vehicle and suspect was sent out over dispatch, and a nearby unit responded. A chase ensued, and Ronald Neipp was finally caught after police say he hit a pedestrian in the 1400 block of Kingsbury Road. The pedestrian is expected to be alright.
Neipp, 50, has been charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, felonious assault, eluding, obstructing official business and resisting arrest.
"Obviously, we're dealing with someone who is an unstable type of person and you never know what they're going to be capable of," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the Toledo Police Department.
This is the second time in a week that J&D's Side Trip has been the victim of a robbery. The bar was robbed at knifepoint Monday night. Police believe Neipp could be the one responsible for the other two robberies.
Hennessey says she's just happy he won't be able to do this to anyone else.
