OTTAWA COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Thanks to Groupon, one special officer in Ottawa County is getting some added protection.

Nero has been trained to save lives, and now a special vest might save his. He is the only K9 officer at the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, so keeping him safe on the job is essential.

The four-legged crime fighter will be wearing more than just a harness this spring. He's been selected to receive a new bullet- and stab-proof vest. The $2,500 lifesaver is being purchased through donations on Groupon, a popular website for saving money.

A group called "Vested Interest in K9s" started the grassroots fundraiser on Feb. 15, and in just a few weeks, each $10 donation has added up to nearly $300,000.

Nero's handler Marc Nye says getting this new vest will make him feel a little more secure when Nero can't be by his side on the scene of a crime.

"It's hard to send your pet into a dangerous situation, and it feels the same for us," Nye said. "We're sending him into a dangerous situation and when you have that bond it can be difficult to do that, so we're lucky to have the opportunity to get this vest and protect him any way we can."

The fundraiser ends Wednesday night at midnight. To donate, go to Groupon and search for "vested interest."
