GLVC Tournament to bring big business to Evansville

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

With the women's quarterfinals kicking off the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament yesterday, the tournament is bringing thousands of visitor and thousands of dollars to Evansville this week.

The income boost to the area is expected to be even greater than what was seen last year.

Organizers are expecting to see double the amount of tickets sold this year. Last year 8,000 were sold, so that makes this year's goal 16,000.

Evansville Sports Corp Executive Director Jason Sands says he's estimated the economic impact from the tournament at $120,000.

That number includes leasing fees for the city-owned Ford Center as well as the money spent at the hotels the teams sleep in and restaurants they, their families and their fans eat in.

Rami Jawabreh, an Angelo's Italian Restaurant employee, says he expects to see an increase in crowds this weekend, since they are located within walking distance of the Ford Center.

He says, the restaurant also hopes to make a good impression that lasts beyond the tournament days.

"If they're trying Angelo's for the first time and they really enjoy the food, the atmosphere, the service, I would be most certain that they'd come back again, even if they're just passing through town."

Sands expects that will be the case, at least for some of the visitors, but his $120,000 figure does not include an estimate of future dollars those visitors will spend.
