Funding secured for final phase of Blanchard River flood study

FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Army Corps of Engineers has budgeted $1.5 million to fund the final phase of the Blanchard River flood mitigation study.

For months it wasn't clear if the Army Corps would be able to pay their share of the funding for the study, but now that funding is in place, Findlay officials are hoping they are within sight of the long study's completion.

Findlay and Hancock County officials believe their work on the ground in Buffalo at the Army Corps of Engineers' regional headquarters, and in Washington DC, along with work from local representatives and the Marathon CEO helped convince lawmakers to give the study federal money.

The final phase of the study will be finished in a chief engineer's report that will go before Congress, where up to 65 percent of construction costs could be granted.

Local leaders are happy the study is moving again and plan for it to be completed by the first quarter of 2015.

"I know that this has been a long and lengthy process, and an expensive one at that," said Findlay Mayor Lydia Mihalik. "But it's time to get it done and wrapped up so that we can actually have some decision-making ability in our hands here in Findlay."

Once the report goes before Congress, the Blanchard River study will move into the implementation stage.
