Toledo pools could open with help from Police Athletic League

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo children may get a chance to cool off in the pool this summer after all. Initially, Mayor D. Michael Collins's administration had said there would be no money in the budget to open pools in 2014. Now, Toledo Police may be able to help the city afford it.

Mayor Collins met with Police Chief William Moton and other law enforcement officials Monday to discuss the plan. The money would come from a fund that pays for the Police Athletic League.

Collins says it will cost about $230,000 to open the city's pools this summer. The city could spend less by opening only some if its pools.

"The next step is whether or not the division of police operations is willing to go to the PAL (Police Athletic League) board and move the pools under the authority of PAL, and expand what PAL does in the city of Toledo," said Collins.

According to Collins, the department will make that decision within 24 hours.
