(Toledo News Now) -

When we think of military and police members, we may forget about the contribution of man's best friend. Even in our own neighborhood, police dogs are an important part of three Wood County police departments. They are vital in catching many criminals, but they may not have the protection necessary to do their work.

One Lake Township officer realized there wasn't much money in the budget to help keep K-9 officers safe, so he set out to make a difference. Community members can help by purchasing a t-shirt to benefit Kevlar for K9's.

"Every time I go on duty even just part time I have body armor to protect me every shift. I look around and I see the dogs who arguably have more arrests in their bedroom and do as much work as I do," said Jon Penny, a Lake Township Patrolman.

Bruno, X, and Gideon are each vital parts of the Lake Township, Perrysburg Township and Rossford Police Departments. Officers say they're missing some potentially lifesaving equipment: Kevlar vests. The outerwear can protect pups from gunshots, stab wounds, and even weather elements.

The fundraising goal is to raise about $4,200 to get the vests for the four-legged officers. A kick-a-thon along with informational seminars will be held at Perrysburg's Black Belt Academy on March 22 to help raise money.
