City to buy 800 new fire hydrants with safety, cost savings in mind

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo City Council voted Tuesday to buy 800 new fire hydrants for the city at a cost of just over $1 million.

City leaders say the new hydrants with feature an anti-tampering mechanism to stop civilians from opening them. That will help prevent waste of valuable water, and keep water pressure high enough in case of a fire.

Leaders also say buying so many hydrants at one time will save the city money.

"Ordinarily when we engage in processes we replace the hydrant if we replace the street and so we're hoping to buy in bulk so we can get a better rate than some of our contractors could get," said councilmen Lindsay Webb.

The city has not said when the hydrants will start to be installed.
