WILMINTON, NC (WECT) - A tentative plan in place for developing the piece of property that currently contains the Water Street parking deck will have to wait about another month before it is voted on.

Wilmington City Council delayed voting on a resolution Tuesday in support of a proposal laid out by the UNC Chapel Hill School of Government's Development Finance Initiative for the parking deck. The proposal will be discussed at the May 6 City Council meeting.

The proposal is to use the land for multiple purposes with an emphasis on residential use.

Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said the council still has a lot of talking to do before anything is finalized.

"There's a lot of pressures on that particular site. From a parking perspective, to an open space perspective, to reopening Chestnut Street, to how the building will look and the size and the scope of the building," Saffo explained. "There's a lot of pressure for us to make sure we do the right thing."

Saffo said he wants to hold a workshop in the next month for council members to hash out the details of what will go in the area.

He said the plan is to have a Request For Quotation to submit by June for the property.
