TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A young boy sustained permanent brain damage and his foster mother has been charged with child abuse.

Griselda Badilla is the foster mother and the suspect in the alleged abuse case.

The incident happened on March 11, in the 6200 block of E. Window Ridge on Tucson's far east side, after Badilla called 9-1-1 to report her foster son was choking on food.

Tucson Police investigated the incident further, after the two-year-old was admitted to the hospital with significant injuries and massive bleeding to his brain.  They determined the injuries were not accidental.

"Later that day a CT scan of the child's head revealed that the child has suffered an injury, a head injury with what the medics say is consistent with a non-accidental trauma," said TPD Officer Brandon Tatum.

Police subsequently charged Badilla with felony child abuse.

Badilla's attorney denies the allegations, saying she had nothing to do with the boy's injuries.  Badilla is currently booked into the Pima County Jail, as immigration officials try and determine her legal status.

This case remains under investigation.
