Boone County Sheriff's detectives are investigating a series of thefts from vehicles that happened earlier this month in Northern Kentucky.
Authorities said the theft was reported March 15 while parked at 5550 Idlewild Road. According to detectives, there were related reports of vehicles broken into in Florence and Park Hills the day before.
The thieves targeted cars with purses and wallets locked inside. Authorities said they smashed a window to get inside the vehicle and the suspects then forged checks from the Park Hills and Florence victims' checkbooks to one of the victims from the England/Idlewild Park using that victim's checking deposit ticket and personal identification to complete the transaction. The suspect used various banks in Highland Heights, Taylor Mill, Alexandria, Kentucky and Montfort Heights, Ohio.
The forged checks were written in excess of $3,000. However, they used a split deposit scheme to avoid suspicion, where half the amount was deposited and the other half returned in cash.
Anyone who can identify the man in the surveillance photos or the Jeep Patriot is asked to call either the Boone County Sheriff's Office at (859) 334-2175 or Crime Stoppers at (513) 352-3040.
