Perrysburg approves special use permit for Costco

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Perrysburg City Council has voted to approve a special use permit to build a Costco in the city.

The final site plan for the project will still have to go before the Perrsyburg Planning Commission on Thursday.

Approval of that plan would clear the way for the retailer to begin construction near the intersection of State Route 25 and Eckel Junction Road.

Council voted 4 to 2 to approve the special use permit. Some had opposed the plan because of traffic concerns.

An Ohio Department of Transportation study says the businesses impact on traffic flow would be less than 5 percent.

City leaders say their concern was whether or not the plan met city requirements. They say they cannot tell Costco where to build a store.

"Based on the way it was zoned and what they're bringing to the table, it fits, and so legally, if it fits inside the zoning who are we to disagree with that," said Councilman Todd Grayson.

Costco has agreed to pay for turning lanes on State Route 25 and new signs.
