(WMC-TV) - An elderly couple is without a home and recovering from smoke inhalation Tuesday after Memphis firefighters pulled them from their burning home.
Witnesses say fire raced though the Vaughn Street home.
"I could tell the fire was coming from the back of the house," said neighbor Sandra Arnold.
Arnold lives across the street. She was one of several neighbors who scrambled to call 911. She says firefighters arrived at the house in minutes.
"When we opened the front door. We gained entry and advanced to the exterior of the structure conducting our primary search procedures," said Wayne Cooke, Memphis Fire Department.
Fire rescue teams found an elderly female near the front door. However, they had to go to the back of the house to find her husband.
"Located the male in the rear of the structure and rescued him from the structure," said Cooke.
Paramedics took the man to the hospital. His condition was listed as critical, but his wife's condition is non-critical.
"The female was responsive. The male was somewhat responsive," said Cooke.
Just what caused the fire is still being investigated. Arnold volunteered to look after the couples' pets while they are being treated at the hospital.
