(WMC-TV) - An elderly man who was brutally beaten in a Memphis park last October has died from his injuries. Police continue the search for the person who will now face homicide charges for the fatal beating.

Neighbors say the park is dangerous after dark, but the victim's son is not afraid; he wants those responsible for his father's death to pay.

"It's a terrible thing that my father didn't make it home," said Johnny Hurley Jr.

His 78-year-old father, Johnny Hurley, died Friday. The Medical Examiner says he died as a result of his injuries after being beaten in Glenview Park last October.

"That's the sad thing about it, that no one is doing anything about it. This is happening on Lamar, McLean, Barksdale, major streets," said Hurley.

Hurley Sr. was found lying on the ground bleeding severely from the head and face in the park near a tunnel that runs underneath the railroad track.

"Everybody who grew up around here that moved over here when my father moved over here, know my father and respect my father, and would've never done that," said Hurley. "I used to warn him. He felt like he had been over here like he could walk through here. I'd be like, 'Daddy it's not safe to walk through this park in the daytime, let alone when it's dark, ' " said Hurley.

Hurley says his father thought he was safe since he had visited the park for many years. Hurley says he does not believe those responsible will get away with this crime.

"I know who assaulted my father, but the police detectives telling me because they are minors they can't be picked up on hearsay," said Hurley. "Whoever was involved in that going to get caught up in the streets very soon, and as far as people knowing who did this and not coming forward and saying nothing, you all are just as guilty as they are."

The homicide bureau asks anyone with information to come forward and call 528-CASH.
