Children's Services: Reports of child abuse cannot be made on Facebook

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Social media can be a great tool to communicate many things, but Lucas County Children's Services says reporting child abuse is not one of them.

The department says its Facebook page has been great for providing educational information, but it has begun to receive messages reporting child abuse. Children's Services cannot take a report of child abuse via social media. In fact, that would be illegal. All reports must be given in person or over the phone.

"We need to be able to talk to that person who has the first hand information, so we really prefer that people do call us so that we can ask questions, so that we can clarify what the issues are, so that we can get the best response to whatever that complaint is," said Lucas County Children's Services Executive Director Dean Sparks.

Those providing tips can still remain anonymous. To report child abuse, call Lucas County Children's Services at (419) 213-3200 or visit their offices in person at 705 Adams Street, Toledo OH.
