A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
A new business could help to breathe new life into the area around the former Southwyck mall. The area has seen many vacant storefronts since the mall shut down in 2008.
"When Southwyck Mall was here it used to be packed with people and the area used to be doing so well but now when Southwyck closed its been going downhill, and even if you look around it is kind of run down now, many businesses are closing," said Rajwinder Kaur of the Tandoor restaurant next door.
Garden Ridge, a home goods store based in Texas, will soon occupy one of those vacant storefronts along Reynolds Road.
Those who work at businesses near the future location say new development in the area is a sight for sore eyes.
"I am excited. It's at least something new will be opening across the street and then maybe bring, it will bring more costumers, more revenue for all the other business around the area," said Kaur.
Toledo City Councilman Matthew Cherry says the building was purchased for $1.6 million, and that $3 million will go into developing the building.
Cherry hopes to employee local construction to revamp the building, and says the opening of the new store will create 20 jobs.
"I actually grew up in this neighborhood for a while, and it was a great hussel and bussel neighborhood and it has significantly gone downhill, and we need to do something about that and get it back and shape and I think this is the way that we are going to do it," said Cherry.
As part of its agreement, Garden Ridge will demolish the Clarion Hotel. That should happen sometime in the next couple months. There is no date for the start of construction on the Garden Ridge store.
