WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A local business dealt with Obamacare blunders as millions of people across the nation attempted to sign up for healthcare plans before the midnight deadline Tuesday.

Alex Mercer runs the Mercer Insurance Group.  Mercer and his team tried to help sign clients up for insurance policies through healthcare.gov Monday. The deadline for the policy had been set to April 1.

According to Mercer, he had a difficult time helping his clients sign up due to website crashes.

Mercer said these crashes have created a backlog for his business. He said that a list of 50 people had been waiting to get help from his company for hours.

"Literally while I'm helping one person, there are five or six that are trying to get help that are not in the backlog of who's called on Sunday, Saturday, Friday, last Thursday that I couldn't get to so the backlog is just piling up," Mercer explained.

He said not only has the website shutdown hurt his business, it's hurting the public.

"We put a lot of effort into this and there are a lot of people that we could have served that we are not able to. It impacted our bottom line, but more importantly it impacted our ability to help people," Mercer said.

Mercer hopes the website stays up and running as his clients try to register during the latest extension period.
