PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Some concerned parents reached out to Toledo News Now, upset after they said their children's teachers were encouraging the use of hand sanitizer over soap.
Doctor Colleen Olson with Mercy Pediatrics in Perrysburg says hand sanitizer is not as effective as soap and water.
"It's [hand sanitizer] only effective if you use enough, and it's only effective if you have an alcohol content of 60-95-percent, and if you allow your hands to dry for about 30 seconds before doing anything else. That's when the hand sanitizers will work the best," said Olson.
Doctor Olson says soap and water should always be used when hands are soiled. She also says whether or not the soap is antibacterial doesn't matter; both are effective.
Of course, Olson says, if hand sanitizer is the only option, it should be used.
