(WMC-TV) - The city of Southaven proposed a smoking ban.
Wadford's Grill and Bar is one place where smokers can feel free to light up, but Southaven's city leaders do not quite see it that way.
Mayor Darren Musselwhite says it is not a matter of choice, it is about people.
"We certainly don't want to hurt businesses we don't want to do that, that's not our goal, but I'll just leave you with this: It becomes a public safety issue," he said.
Musselwhite says he reviewed several cities that have issued smoking bans. Their models show the ban does not cause business to decrease.
"Personally I'm a smoker myself. I'm ashamed of it sometimes, because it's an addiction, but I also have four grandkids in Southaven so I wholeheartedly support Mayor Musselwhite," said resident Phillip Schoonover.
Donna Wadford of the bar and grill questions the fairness of enforcing this decision as law.
"I think it's boils down to a personal choice. If you don't want to visit that restaurant then don't," she said.
The board of aldermen agreed to review the model ordinances before making a formal recommendation to a committee. Southaven aldermen plan to address the smoking ban issue more in depth in their next agenda meeting.
