RYLAND HEIGHTS, KY (FOX19) -

A man is in custody after firing at police and engaging in a six hour standoff in Ryland Heights, Ky.

The incident began when authorities responded to the home of Jerry Lee Mardis, 55, regarding a burglary that occurred earlier in the day.

Mardis allegedly broke into the Locust Pike home of his father, destroyed property and took several checkbooks, according to Sgt. Ben Wilson.

Authorities went to Mardis' home, which is down the street from his father, to speak with him about the burglary.  Upon arrival, Mardis fired shots at police from a trailer outside of the home, according to authorities.

The Northern Kentucky Emergency Response Unit was called to the scene after Mardis refused to communicate with responding officers.

After a six hour standoff, Mardis was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for what officials say are minor injuries. He was released and charged with Wanton Endangerment, a class D felony that could land him up to five years in jail.
