Fremont farmers' market expanding

FREMONT, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Local farmers and greenhouse owners are now able to sign up for a growing local tradition in downtown Fremont.

Planning has begun for the ninth annual "Ralph's Joy of Living Farmer's Market" in downtown Fremont. Due to demand, this year the event has grown.

The yearly event started as a way to draw people to downtown businesses, but has become a community tradition. Last year the market hosted a record 53 vendors.

Due to high demand for more local produce, coordinators have added an eight market day. The market will be held on the third Saturday of June and July, and the first and third Saturday in August, September and October from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors can buy fresh produce then patronize downtown businesses.

Each market day also features different themes such as car shows or kids markets.

Officials believe the recent trend of buying local goods has helped make this farmer's market a success.

"I think people are very smart. They want to keep their money in their local area. And if you shop at a local area, you know that that money stays in your county or city," said Downtown Fremont Inc. Director Kristie Bilger.

There is no vendor limit for the event. If you'd like to showcase your wares at the farmer's market, http://www.joyofliving.com/farmersmarket to sign up.
