(FOX19) -

We have an update Friday on a story the FOX19 Investigative team brought you back in November.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting a surge in the number of liquid nicotine poisonings caused by e-cigarettes.

In a report released Thursday, poison control centers say as of February they average more than 200 calls each month related to these poisonings.

That number is up from just one call per month back in 2010.

The CDC says children are particularly at risk with more than half of February's calls involving children 5 or younger.

E-cigarettes are not required to be childproof. They come in flavors like spearmint, banana and bubble gum. Poisoning can occur from ingestion, inhalation or skin absorption.

And here's how it's affecting the Tri-State.

According to the Cincinnati Drug and Poison Information Center, they have received 14 calls related to e-cigarette liquid so far this year. That's nearing the 21 they received in all of 2013.
