LOWER PRICE HILL, OH (FOX19) -

Lower Price Hill residents on Monday voted against allowing a needle exchange program in their neighborhood.

The Cincinnati Needle Exchange program provides clean needles to drug addicts with no questions asked. Run out of an RV and completely funded by grants, the program was set to establish headquarters in Lower Price Hill before the Community Council voted it down.

Opposition to the program says the exchange enables the use of drugs rather than addressing the root of the epidemic.

Supporters say the program helps to prevent the spread of disease while providing outreach.

Directors of the needle exchange say they plan to continue their mission in other neighborhoods, with potential locations being Mount Auburn and Northside.

Monday's vote comes one week after a needle exchange program was shut down in Springdale.
