Husted adds committee to oversee Lucas County BOE operations

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Secretary of State has made a major announcement regarding what he calls "ongoing problems" at the Lucas County Board of Elections. Jon Husted has added a new transparency committee to oversee their operations.

The Secretary of State says the main goal is to ensure an open and effective election process. A four-member committee of two Democrats and two Republicans will now work with the Lucas County BOE.

"It has become apparent that there is a severe lack of communication among board members, and between the board and its staff. Steps must now be taken to force public accountability and open dialogue to focus on finding local solutions to local problems," said Secretary of State Jon Husted.

Board members say they just found out about the committee on Monday night. Member Jon Stainbrook says he supports the Secretary of State's decision.

"Voters here deserve a fair election. They deserve to have every vote counted. I applaud the Secretary of State for putting the committee together. It validates the exact concerns I've had," said Stainbrook.

The board just replaced its director last month. The first meeting with the BOE and transparency committee will be Wednesday morning.
