(WMC-TV) - Nearly 400 Family Dollar stores will soon close across the country. That is the word from the discount chain that built dozens of new stores in the Memphis area.
A store on Crump Road is among the new Family Dollar stores built in Memphis over the last few years, but the company is not saying if it or other area stores are among those closing.
There are more than 80 Family Dollar stores in the Memphis area alone, like the one at Poplar Avenue and Tillman Street.
Leslie Fulton is just one of the chain's frequent shoppers.
"They've got hiring signs up, so you'd think it was growing," said Fulton. "I just came here just no wm because I didn't want to deal with Kroger, so"
Despite Family Dollar's recent growth, the company announced Thursday that it will close 370 stores nationwide, reduce its workforce, and, like many of its customers, look for other ways to save.
The news comes after a dip in revenues and increased competition from similar chains.
A spokesman had this to say when asked about Memphis area stores, "The company is working to finalize the store closure plan and will disclose information on impacted locations at the appropriate time."
"I hate that, because Family Dollar has been in my family for a long time," said shopper Brandon Douglas.
It appears as if older and/or low performing stores will be targeted while the chain still plans to expand in 2015. In addition to store closings, Family Dollar's action plan includes lowering prices.
