Whitmer football giving back off the field

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

On the field, they're hard hitters but off of it, the Whitmer Panthers have soft hearts.

"Whitmer is all about bringing the community together," said Junior Defensive Back Royce Colbert. "It's great to give back to them whenever we can."

And they do it often. Head Coach Jerry Bell requires the varsity team put in a collective 800 hours of community service a year.

"It all started pretty much at the beginning of last season," said Colbert. "We do all types of community service projects."

Helping the homeless is something that's particularly important to the Panthers. Thursday they came to St. Paul's Community Center in downtown Toledo. There, they prepared and served food to dozens of people less fortunate then they are.

"When you look at Washington local and you look at the things we're going through when you look at the high population of low income," said head Coach Jerry Bell. "It hits home for us."

After a couple hours in the kitchen, the Panthers went home. A luxury afforded to them and not the people they served.

"Coming down here obviously grounds you," said Bell. "It gives you a little humility and humble pie."

Today's life lesson:

"More giving then receiving," said Colbert.

And it's a lesson Coach Bell hopes the team will never forget.
