Patrick Henry Schools to put building consolidation on May levy

HAMLER, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Voters in Henry County will have an important school levy to vote on this May.  The Patrick Henry School District is taking on the task of consolidating their school buildings.

The Patrick Henry building project will be funded mostly through a $1.9 million levy on the May ballot.  It's replacing a $1 million permanent improvement levy.

The $900,000 increase will cost homeowners an additional $3 per month.  Other funding will come from saving upwards of $350,000 per year from the closure of the district's two elementary schools.

The plan is to add eight rooms to the high school and twelve to the middle school to make room for the elementary students.

Superintendent Thomas Taylor says one campus makes sense both financially and in terms of education.

"With our bussing of our consolidation here, our elementary students, they lose 40 minutes of instruction time each day," said Superintendent Taylor.  "That adds up to 17 days a year."

The District has 20 meetings planned across the district to talk with voters.

"We have a quality school district," said Superintendent Taylor.  "This is only going to enhance what we're able to do academically with our students."
