MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Is it buying votes? Or is it promoting local businesses?

A Shelby County Commission candidate's campaign flyer includes a set of coupons and at least one of his opponents in the democratic primary isn't happy about it.

The May 6 primary is right around the corner.

The Shelby County Commission District 10 race is heating up because Martavius Jones wants your vote -- and for you to get a discount.

"I am a small business owner," he said. "It is my platform as a county commissioner to support businesses."

To make his point, he sent out a campaign mailer that includes 10 coupons.

"There's no quid pro quo agreement with any of these businesses," explained Jones.

"When I first looked at it, I was shocked because I've never seen in all the years in politics, a candidate use coupons to sell himself to the public," Shelby County Commission District 10 candidate Reginald Milton. "Regrettably what we feel Mr. Jones has done is at best unethical, but at worst illegal, so we're turning this over to the attorney general to look at."

In addition to Jones and Milton, Jake Brown is also running for the Shelby County Commission District 10 seat.

"I know there's been some controversy about it with the coupons on the back," Brown weighed in. "I'm not convinced frankly that he did anything wrong."

Brown continued, "I don't feel like it's buying votes because I know I'm gonna take this mailer and go down to Payne's Barbecue and get my 10 percent off on pork shoulder and I'm probably gonna vote for myself."

"I don't know anybody's vote that's out there for sale for a dollar or two, whatever the case may be," added Jones. "I wouldn't jeopardize what I feel like is my good name to try to buy somebody's vote."
