SWANTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Members of the Ohio Air National Guard 180th Fighter Wing were in the air Wednesday, traveling more than 500 miles per hour in their F-16 fighter jets as part of a training exercise.

Airmen spend between 3 and 4 hours in the air each week simulating missions.

180th Fighter Wing Commander Colonel Craig Baker says the post takes the training very seriously.

"Within minutes we have to be airborne to protect not only the state of Ohio but really 60 percent of the population within 500 to 600 miles of here," said Baker.

Baker is new to the 180th, and says his goal as leader will be to have effective combat power, continue to provide support to civil authorities and to give back to the community

"Our mission has always been accomplished by our airmen and our airmen will always make sure we accomplish that vision and mission," said Baker.

Baker is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, and has booked more than 2,500 flight hours. He says that experience will serve the 180th.

"I can bring this leadership now to this level and really what it means is growing our airmen to a point where I can develop our airmen, professionally and personally," said Baker.
