Oak Harbor school officials review protocol after two bomb threats

OAK HARBOR, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Two bomb threats at schools in Oak Harbor turned out to be false alarms, but the search to find the culprit behind them continues.

"A little bit anxious coming in today," said Superintendent Guy Parmigian, Benton Carroll Salem Schools.

School leaders are meeting with law enforcement the day after the threats to discuss what went right and wrong during the bomb threats on Monday April 21.

"You're always as prepared as you can be, but you can always learn from experiences like this," said Parmigian.

The superintendent says he's pleased with how quickly teachers and students followed protocol, getting students to board buses as the school dismissed early. One area that didn't flow as smoothly was the instant alert system for parents.

"I accidentally just typed the word ‘threat' in, not realizing that parents only received, some parents didn't receive, the voicemail, and just the text. So some parents got a text initially that just said the word ‘threat,'" said Parmigian.

Parmigian and his staff are reviewing areas for improvement if a similar situation were to occur. Meanwhile, Oak Harbor police say pranks like this are frustrating, not to mention time-consuming to thoroughly check.

"Every door, every closet, every file cabinet. It was a 3.5 hour search per building," said Chief Steven Weirich, Oak Harbor Police Department.

Police say they are working to track down the unidentified caller, who disguised his voice.

Unlike a recent incident at Port Clinton High, where a bomb threat was called in as a distraction for a robbery, police say no separate incidents have been reported in Oak Harbor.

Another threat called into Sandusky High School Monday April 21, is still under investigation. Authorities are working to find out if all three incidents are related.
