TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

April 26 the doors to the long awaited Great Lakes maritime museum will finally open. It is a state of the art facility featuring Toledo's connection to American history.

It is an attraction for those of all ages. The new museum offers visual and hands-on experiences. All new exhibits, interactive exhibits, and items for adults and children tell the history of the Great Lakes as part of our national story.

"Our museum looks at the big issues of American history and how they played out in the Great Lakes and our nation's development, and we do that through original artifacts, photographs, as well as over 45 interactive exhibits," said Executive Director Christopher Gillcrist.

Toledo's museum ship, the S.S. Colonel James M. Schoonmaker, will be on display to visitors this weekend for the first time.

Gillcrist says the new multimillion dollar museum offers an economic boost to the city and the role Toledo played in American history.
