The Tiffin Police Department has a new
vehicle in the garage, but it's not a Crown Victoria or a Charger. It's an
armored vehicle known as a Humbert Pig.
The department got the massive vehicle from a
larger department, which upgraded its assault vehicle.
Tiffin paid just $1 for the Humbert Pig.
Before the purchase, the closest armored
vehicle to Tiffin was in either Toledo or Columbus. City leaders say they hope
the department never has to use the vehicle, but it's nice to have just in
"We really hope we never have to use it, but
it's good, with all the incidents that we're seeing nowadays with schools,
businesses, we're living in a new world and it's better for Tiffin to be
prepared. So if some of the neighboring communities such as Fremont, Findlay,
Upper Sandusky, if they need this they'll have one close by also," said Tiffin
Mayor Aaron Montz.
The vehicle is nearly 7 feet tall, 16 feet
long and weighs around 6 tons. Maximum speed in the Humbert Pig is about 40
miles per hour. It runs on regular gasoline, not diesel.
Montz says he believes maintenance on the vehicle
will be minimal, as it will likely only be driven a few miles a year.
