TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Public Schools made changes Tuesday, increasing the presence of Toledo police and the district's own personnel. Superintendent Dr. Romules Durant says there will be a continued heavier presence for the rest of this week, after a high school student was found with a loaded gun Monday.

Durant wanted parents to have peace of mind and for students to resume their normal activities, a day after Willie Carter brought in that loaded handgun.

Making safety a continued top priority, Durant says the district will continue to do periodic weapons checks.

Metal detectors float around the district, according to Durant, but at this time, there are no daily metal detectors at Start High School.

"We're going to make sure that we heavily continue to make sure they're going through each week and identifying particular high schools. But the main thing is we're going to continue to hold high priority as safety, in regards to our students, and more importantly, continue to collaborate with our community, as well as local law enforcement," explained Durant.

Durant says the district works with community members, Toledo police and its own personnel, so if and when situations like this occur, they have a plan and execute it accordingly.

The phone call about a person with a gun inside the school came from the outside. Durant wants to remind parents to listen to their children, communicate with them, and be sure to keep school officials in the loop if anything seems suspicious.
