Toledo neighborhood seeing string of break-ins

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A string of car break-ins in one Toledo neighborhood has everyone on edge.

It's happening in the Willys Parkway area near Berdan.

Neighbors say thieves are getting bolder with how they're breaking into cars.  Instead of hitting cars parked on the street, they're creeping closer to homes, and stealing from right under people's noses, sometimes even busting down doors to get in the garage.

Residents say cars are being broken into repeatedly in this neighborhood.  Kyle Barney, who lives there, says his house was the most recent casualty.  A laptop was stolen out of the backseat of his dad's care.

"(They) kicked into our garage to get in," Barney said.  "It's troubling how much they think they can get away with now."

Barney is especially troubled by thieves, because this isn't the first time he's been a victim.

"My car's been broken into five or six times," he says.

Barney's installed padlocks and even motion detectors lights to keep the bad guys out, but admits at the end of the day, there's not much else he can do.

"We'll just leave the car unlocked, they're still going to steal the stuff but at least we won't have to pay to get new windows and all that stuff," he jokes.

Toledo Police say they've increased patrols in the area, and they've been on the lookout in unmarked cars for any suspicious activity.
