A few days ago, a Lucas County jury found former liquor store clerk Nicholas Thompson guilty of selling alcohol to a group of minors last year.
The sale was made to teens including Ottawa Hills senior Brian Hoeflinger, who later tragically died in a drunk driving vehicle crash.
Mr. Thompson was sentenced to six months at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio. He will also pay a fine as part of his sentence.
This sort of justice may appear harsh, but it is necessary if we want to stop illegal alcohol sales. Simple fines are not enough. Underage drinking is a real problem and sometimes results in horrible outcomes.
Coming down hard on the clerks and merchants who illegally and irresponsibly sell this alcohol won't stop kids from drinking beer and booze. It just might make the adults who sell it think twice before doing so.
