A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
Police agencies throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan were out in full force Friday night, trying to prevent dangerous driving behaviors.
Officials with the Ohio State Highway Patrol say 14 impaired drivers were arrested and a total of 199 citations were issued during the 29th annual "CIRCLE TOLEDO" campaign.
Beginning Friday, May 2, at 6 p.m., to Saturday, May 3, at 6 a.m., 30 law enforcement agencies patrolled area roadways for drunk drivers.
"One of the things that we do is we look at our crash statistics and we look at where the impaired driving crashes occur. Then we will put officers in those locations at the times they are most likely to occur," said Lieutenant William Bowers.
Police say OVI arrests have been down because the rough winter kept drivers off the roadways, but this time of year is when most drivers hit the road because the weather is warm again. They say people start driving a little bit more recklessly as well.
In 2013, the Toledo Post, which covers the metro area and Fulton County, busted 860 impaired drivers.
"We've been very successful in removing a lot of the impaired drivers in the Toledo area in the last three years. High number of OVI arrests. It might be because we're getting better at locating them, putting officers in the right place at the right time," said Bowers.
Here are the numbers from the 12 hour enforcement effort:
14 Impaired drivers were arrested (OVI Arrests)
397 Total Vehicles were stopped
18 Seat Belt citations were issued
199 Total citations were issued
Law enforcement agencies from Wood, Lucas Fulton and Monroe Counties, as well as the Michigan State Police, participated in "CIRCLE TOLEDO."
