The Toledo Fire Department says a fire that burned all weekend at Stickney Recycling in north Toledo has been extinguished.
The fire was detected early on the morning of Friday, May 2. The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department issued a smoke warning to residents, urging those in the area to stay indoors. That warning was lifted over the weekend.
The department announced the fire was out just before 3 p.m. Monday, May 5. Health Department officials say tests of the smoke and materials which burned show nothing to be alarmed about.
Toledo fire crews worked 24 hours a day to fight the blaze
of construction materials over the weekend. Fire Chief Louis Santiago says
firefighters spent a total of 600 hours fighting the fire.
Stickney Recycling will continue to monitor the area to
ensure the fire does not reignite, and will also monitor the air around the
Santiago says even though he's proud of the way his crews
handled the fire, the department will take a look at how it's procedures.
"I think the overall operations are going to be evaluated.
Anything from the health aspect, to the environmental aspect to the fire
aspect. Because again, from the fire aspect, I can tell you there is not adequate
water there to sustain any kind of successful fight of any fire of any
magnitude," said Santiago.
Stickney Recycling is currently unable to accept new materials
because of a restraining order. That order was placed because of the fire. The
company will be in court for a hearing on the matter Tuesday morning.
