A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
An 18-year-old boy was arrested after police say he was inappropriately touching two girls on a crowded Bowling Green playground Saturday May 3.
"My daughter was touched in her breast and my son was choked, while the other little girl was being drug down the stairs and he was touching her," said the mother.
Police say it started off as innocent horseplay then quickly escalated to inappropriate groping and touching of both a 9 and 15-year-old girl. The 9-year-old ran away to get help. Her big brother, only 11-years-old, stayed behind, trying to defend the 15-year-old girl.
That's when police say the suspect, 18-year-old Macconnell Hall, turned his anger towards the boy.
"He was held down to the ground, hard enough where it hurt him," said the mother.
"He grabbed a hold of the 15-year-old female and allegedly took her downstairs into one of the buildings and again inappropriately touched her in her chest area and attempted to touch her in her genital area," Major Tony Hetrick, Bowling Green Police.
Hall was shooed away by another adult. He was arrested and charged with two counts of gross sexual imposition and one count of assault. Hall lives in a Bowling Green group home, nowhere near the playground at Winthrop Terrace Apartments.
"It's crushing. It's not a feeling anyone understands," said the mother.
The mother says it is a feeling no parent should ever experience.
