Fiat Chrysler Automobiles leaders spent Tuesday May 6 outlining their plans to investors and the future looks promising for the models made in Toledo.
Leaders say Jeep is planning a huge global push over the next five years, with sales of the Cherokee more than doubling, and both the Cherokee and Wrangler will be getting a whole new look. We were the only local news station in Michigan for that event.
Chrysler leaders outlined their next five year plan in Auburn Hills and one of their top priorities is Toledo's own Jeep Cherokee. By the end of this year, Jeep Brand CEO Mike Manly says they anticipate selling 1 million of the vehicles, and 1.9 million by 2018.
"Late this year, we will launch the Audi Renegade into the fastest growing segment. The Compass and Patriot will continue until they're replaced in 2016, which is also the year we'll refresh the Cherokee, barely three years in the market. In 2017, we'll have an all new Grand Cherokee, followed by the most premium Jeep we will have ever made, the new Grand Wagoneer," said Mike Manly, Jeep Brand President and CEO.
Manly said they are hoping consumers take as strong of a liking to the new and improved Wagoneer, which is a full size SUV set to release in 2018. The original Wagoneer was built in Toledo.
A production site for the new model has not yet been released. If the Glass City is chosen once again, it could mean new jobs for the area.
The new jeep model is expected to roll off the assembly line in 2016, the same year the company celebrates its 75th anniversary, but some of the automakers vehicles are getting the boot.
"There is so much more that the Chrysler Brand could be, but the internal brand turf war between Chrysler and Dodge for the rights to own that mass market main stream customer have been long and intense," said Al Gardner, Chrysler Brand President and CEO.
After nearly 30 years on the market, the Dodge Grand Caravan Minivan and the Avenger Sedan will be getting the axe. It's in an effort to focus Dodge on performance cars and boost sales of the Chrysler Town and Country.
At a news conference Tuesday evening, CEO Sergio Marchionne talked about how Jeep just posted two record years and that they expect a third year with year-to-date sales to be on track to pass the million vehicle mark.
"Today is the first time that we've articulated such an ambitious volume target demonstrating our belief in its potential and our intention to develop it as a truly global brand," said Marchionne.
Jeep sales are expected to top one million this year. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has unveiled its new logo, but the new brand won't become official until a Fiat shareholders meeting this summer.
