With the first round in the books, the Browns will spend much of Friday getting ready for the second and third rounds of the 2013 NFL Draft.
The event kicks off at 7:00 p.m. tonight.
Meantime, the Browns were the most active team during the first round of the NFL Draft, making three of the five draft-day trades.
After a more than two hour wait, Johnny Football found out he is coming to Cleveland.
The Browns traded up to #22 overall and drafted Manziel.
But none of that happened until after the team selected CB Justin Gilbert from Oklahoma State with its 8th pick.
The Browns did a little wheeling and dealing to get Gilbert. They traded the #4 pick to the Buffalo Bills for the #9 pick this year and for next year's first and fourth round picks. Then they gave the #9 and a fifth round pick to Minnesota -- to move up to #8.
"The thought process was simple. We had an opportunity to move back, pick up some future considerations. We knew where we were in the draft and we felt like it was a good opportunity to continue to improve our team with the number of picks we could get so we made a deal to move back to Buffalo (No. 9). Second trade was another opportunity to get the player we thought we wanted. It didn't cost us much to move back into position when he was on the board. We took that opportunity, and we took the pick with (Oklahoma State CB) Justin Gilbert," said GM Ray Farmer.
Gilbert was happy to hear his name called and more excited to be coming to the Browns to play alongside Joe Haden.
"It's a dream come true. I became friends with him not too long ago, and he's a great guy to be around. I'm sure I'll learn a lot from him," said Justin Gilbert. "I think we're going to turn it around. It starts with the defense, and I think we made the right decision taking me. We're going to continue to build and just work for it, and it's going to turn around in a couple of years. I'm looking forward to it."
Many speculated that the Browns would take Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel first. That was not the case, but they managed to nab him the second time around.
Farmer says they decided to go after Manziel during the middle of the draft, it was only a matter of time.
"The reaction in the room was positive. We knew we were going to bring him to Cleveland at some point, given the opportunity. An opportunity presented itself, and we took that chance," said Farmer. "The other quarterbacks that were available, I'll stay focused on Johnny. We definitely liked his ability to perform and make plays. We liked a guy that brought all the things when we talk about Play Like a Brown. He was passionate, he was relentless, he played fearless, he was competitive and we added a guy to our roster we thought could help us win."
As of right now the Browns have the third pick in the second round which is 35 overall. Then in the third round they have two picks, #7 and #19 which is 71 and 83 overall.
