Working together is the key to successful tourism in Ohio. That's why the movers and shakers in the local industry Thursday May 8 came to Destination Toledo's National Tourism Week celebration.
Local tourism took a big hit back in 2009 because of the recession. It's rebounded, thanks in part to attractions like the new National Great Lakes Museum, Imagination Station's Titanic Exhibit and Birder's Week in Oak Harbor.
"Our town has the same brand as everyone else in the community: 'You will do better in Toledo.' We make family experiences better in Toledo, we think, than other parts of the region," said Rich Nachazel, Destination Toledo.
Hotel, restaurant and attraction officials learned Ohio has a $38 billion tourism industry. Folks are now willing to travel regardless of economic conditions.
"So we may tighten up how much we drive when the economy is good or bad. But one thing we don't neglect to do is get together with family and friends," said Melinda Huntley of the Ohio Travel Association.
Folks at Destination Toledo's event are being told that by working together, they're the cog in the wheel that will make tourism grow.
